Modica, Sicily – Stop 4

The Turning Point

Google and YouTube both aligned to point us in the direction of Modica, Sicily on this road trip around the island.

And in doing so shifted the mindset of this whole trip.

This busy little town gave us a big hug and a smack on the back of the head simultaneously cheering us up and changing our perspective.

It started with the food.

There were tons of restaurants here with patios, checkered tablecloths and happy chatter.

This was the meal where we fell in love with Caponata, an eggplant appetizer.

Ate it like a meal, did not care.

Served up with fresh baked buns that were perfect for dipping.

This was NOT a fancy or expensive place.

They cared about what they were serving and it showed.

Tomato Salad

So what?

This what.

Each one of these tomatoes was bursting with the most intense tomato flavour.

I had to take a picture to capture my happiness.

Obviously grown and ripened in the sun on the vine down the road.

I will never forget those tomatoes.

The Town

The Main Street is a buzz of activity.

Located on the lower tier of this mountain there are a kajillion steps that you can opt into if you want to get to the upper level.

This church in the distance was calling to us.

Absolutely incredible.

I can count on zero hands how often Stevo has insisted on going into a church.

That changed here.

Inside was equally spectacular.

Took the option of heading up to the the very scenic lookout bell tower.

Oh wow, I said, a bell.

The view was incredible. This picture doesn’t do it justice.

I bet all these people accept these bells as the regular background soundtrack to their lives.

We shouldn’t …

..touch them.

The ancient steps we descended were teeny tiny ankle and knee breakers.

How?

Explain to me how this 👇

La Mercería Meat Tribute

What a busy little restaurant!

There was a constant flow of people in and out of here but somehow everyone who came in got a table and so popcorn?

Once seated you were immediately brought some popcorn in a paper bag which for some reason really makes it seem more special that way.

Stevo ordered steak.

For 2 people I guess.

I went for the burger.

After I ate half I felt compelled to film a tribute to the best burger of MY LIFE!

Modica is known for its chocolate.

It’s a different kind of chocolate taste and texture then we’re used to.

Just here to experience every thing Sicily has to offer as it shows up.

It’s very real here. No one is putting up a smoke show for your benefit.

As it should be.

Heading over to Ragusa just North if us next.
