Trapani Sicily – Stop 6

Every new day brings a brand new breakfast treat here in Sicily.

I don’t usually eat breakfast but when you’re sitting at a perfectly good bakery just cranking out fresh baked croissants stuffed ( injected?) with a rich cream filling, you make an exception.

Coffee and stuffed croissants

That’s right, injected.

This one was pistachio cream and I can’t wait to find this in my life again somewhere.

With renewed sugar spiking energy we started our tour of Trapani, Sicily.

This town is so beautiful.

Come have a look around with us.

It always starts with a general recon of the area.

Driving around we google for accommodations in places we like.

Never (or very rarely ) do we book ahead of time.

There’s no shortage of accommodations in off season.

This Vine!

Don’t scroll by this next photo.

Just give it a minute.

This flowering vine is spectacular.

Never seen any foliage allowed to grow freely like this before.

Blooming vine

Three stories high!

Ok enough plant talk. Onward we go.

Architecture

Standing here, downtown, with these incredibly imposing and impressive buildings is awe inspiring.

Trapani has never come up in any capacity be it historical, educational or recreational for me.

Yet here it is.

Trapani, Sicily

The magnificent gives way to the manufactured and we get a chance to buy a small piece of this experience and remember it always when we look at our squirrel bracelet – or something like that.

Fancy squirrel

Touristy trinkets abound of course. We are downtown after all.

As we move away from the centre core there is that residential atmosphere.

The real place, where real people live – not just visit.

It will usually have the more affordable, or some might argue, even better restaurants and a different vibe as well.

The Trees

Ok more plant talk.

Not much to say about them except they look old and gnarly and super cool.

Trapani gnarly tree

I’m not the only one to think that cause they are promoted to continue to take space alongside the daily traffic of pedestrians.

The Waterfront

Sicily has not, and maybe will not, ever capitalize on their waterfront areas.

They are there for the residents and waterfront commerce and if you want to go there then that’s what you’ll see.

Trapani waterfront

There’s no bling here.

No cafes or boardwalks or parks.

Old fishing boat

I really appreciate that they have managed to maintained this independence from literally everywhere else in the world.

This may change down the road but for now it’s refreshing.

Heading away from the waterfront, down the side streets, there are no fancy hotels or restaurants.

Construction at this complex just stopped for some reason.

Trapani street

This building is a block away from the waterfront.

In any other place this is quite the investment opportunity.

Just not here.

Teeny little corner stores and pizzerias are scattered along our walk.

Pistachio Pizza

Pistachio pizza is a Sicilian specialty.

The only reason I know this is we had a pizza off a pizza cart in Venice that was run by a Sicilian guy.

Sicilian Pistachio pizza

The vendor made us a Pistachio pizza and was adamant that the best pizza comes from Sicily.

Sicilian pizza ( ok food ) is awesome.

But that’s not what we had for dinner on this particular night.

Michelin to be or not to be?

Question: if a Michelin star restaurant doesn’t get a sticker for the current year, is it still considered a Michelin starred restaurant?

We searched for a current red sticker but alas it only had 9 OTHER years of Michelin status.

We threw caution to the wind and went in.

So cute!

Real candles, fluffy bread, local wine chilled to perfection and bookcase wallpaper.

What’s not to love.

Dinner out on the town

The food on the other hand…

Pasta, lamb and tomato salad

Yup it was great too.

Here’s town at night.

Do you need antique furnishings or decor?

Antique chandelier

Have we got a place for you!

Really wish this store was open to have a little look through.

What a treasure hunt!

Road Tripping

Next morning we decided to take a road trip up the mountain.

It starts with, yup, you guessed it.

Pure awesomeness.

Sicilian breakfast

Made a quick stop at the local grocery store for some trunk lunch prep and off we went.

The winding road went up so high.

Ok this view, crazy right? Like if I put my arm up I will punch a cloud!

Erice view

We were making our way to a town not far away from Trapani, that was reported to be a must see.

Trunk Lunch

But first lunch.

Sometimes I impress myself with what I can accomplish on the fly in my little trunk kitchen!

Tuna salad trunk lunch

This salad was too good not to do a photo shoot with.

I amazed me that day.

Tuna Salad

What we experienced on our little day trip made us drop everything and move our accommodations up hill to the ancient castle town of Erice.

Thanks for the great night Trapani!
