Sorrento First Impressions

Sorrento, Italy

Sorrento Italy is a very beautiful city situated high atop the sea along a jagged cliff.

Before actually visiting Sorrento, my minds eye envisioned this as a place where you have a convertible which you drive recklessly along zig zag roads with the wind blowing your big flowy scarf out behind you.

I was not wrong.

We missed the famous Pompeii on the way in due to landslides but our first stop in Sorrento did have cool, colourful paintings of Mount Vesuvius the volcano.

Food at this unnamed restaurant was meh at best. They left one person in our group waiting for 10 minutes after the rest of us were served and came by often only to ignore the accumulation of empty plates.

If it was super busy ok, if we were a party of 6 or more ok, maybe you get a pass. The Michelin star on this place had clearly faded.

The servers know we’re transient and they really don’t seem to care. They aren’t super motivated.

However the streets, buildings and alleys of Sorrento have maintained their charm.

Sadly Sorrento in general has caved to the demands of tourism, and as a result lost it’s authentic self along the way.

To shopping and gitch. They almost got me.

I started to think a floor length, spaghetti strap sundress covered in lemons was something I needed in my life.

I didn’t get one. The voodoo spell didn’t work on me.

Hey look here in the history books of this area…oh wait no mention of chocolate fountains.

Thank goodness for art!

Art is authentic.

It’s in the eye of the beholder and considered art because it was created organically from someone’s soul.

And possibly some old spatulas but whatever! It’s ART. I loved this part.

The architecture and the streets are also beautiful.

The line ups for limoncello samples are not.

I would have loved to see the evolution of this place. From gorge to settlement.

If you turn around from looking at the gorge you see a large square filled with restaurants and cafes.

Sorrento knows how to create an atmosphere. Lots of plants, flowers, trees and soft lighting creates a glamorous mood.

It was a fun day exploring all the side streets and alleys.

The piece de resistance was our dinner.

Look how excited we are over the soup

This was really cool. They brought out all of our meals under silver covers, placed them on the table and then uncovered them all at the same time.

I’m gonna start doing that at home lol.

So for all you food fiends here’s what we had from left to right.

  • Fried something flowers 😘
  • Roast lamb with rosemary and other stuff 👍
  • Seafood pasta 😳 ❤️
  • Calamari with tempura vegetable strips 🤯 amazing

This pasta with burrata and prawns truly deserved its own collage – let’s call it art.

Art that tastes amazing.

Creamy, buttery, melt in your mouth art!

Now this strange ravioli dish, I was told was good.

Yet weird at the same time 🤷🏻‍♀️

If you look past the tourist shops you can still find that old world charm Sorrento is known for.

Day 2 what will you bring…check back!
